How to Control Premenstrual Mood Swings

Crying for so long over the smallest things is not a pleasant thing. But this is an experience that most women go through month after month as part of their menstrual cycle. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the term used to describe the symptoms you experience before your period. It is normal and occurs between ovulation and the first day of your period.

As with other menstrual-related incidents, PMS also comes with its own set of problems. Let’s take a look at one of the most common: mood swings.

What causes premenstrual symptoms?

As part of your menstrual cycle, your body goes through massive hormonal changes. There is a rapid drop in estrogen levels. This drop in turn can cause serotonin levels in your brain to drop. Serotonin is the chemical responsible for maintaining emotional balance and high spirits. So your mood swings start to kick in and you go from screaming to crying to smiling all within a minute.

Common premenstrual symptoms

Breast tenderness
Feeling nauseous
Lower abdominal pain
Lower back pain
Feeling bloated
Headache
Skin rash
Pimples and acne
Mood swings – feeling sad and irritable for no apparent reason

Effective Ways to Control Premenstrual Mood Swings

Pamper yourself: Who doesn’t love pampering herself? Take some time for yourself and spend some moments relaxing. Enjoy a warm bath or treat yourself to a nice spa. Not only will these activities ease menstrual cramps, they will also help you relax and enjoy the days that follow. It is considered the best cure for mood swings.

  • Eat nutritious food: While you may crave junk food, it won’t do much for your period mood swings. Eat soothing foods like warm soups, cooked vegetables, and fresh fruits.

  • Be prepared: Being prepared by stocking up on pads, tampons, and panty liners can help you stay calm and confident during your period. All you need to do is avoid worrying and thinking ahead.

  • Meditate: Relax and meditate in a spacious place. You can also try deep breathing exercises which work well to calm your nerves. It is one of the most effective and natural ways to relieve menstrual mood swings.

  • Spend some time outdoors: It’s very easy to feel depressed and angry when you’re stuck indoors. The most natural cure for mood swings is to take a walk outdoors. Get some fresh air and it will instantly have a positive effect on your mood.

  • Be yourself: Don’t blame yourself or feel guilty about your menstrual mood swings. Allow yourself to be yourself and know that these feelings will soon pass.

Premenstrual syndrome affects most women, and fortunately, the effects fade within a day or two after it begins. If cramps and mood swings are persistently affecting your lifestyle, you should seek medical help.
